Adjuvant IC31®

Adjuvants are needed to educate the immune system to recognize and eliminate pathogens efficiently. IC31® is our most advanced adjuvant that, in combination with antigens, induces both T-cell and B-cell responses.

Product characteristics

Our adjuvant, IC31®, consists of a unique synthetic formulation combining the immunostimulating properties of an anti-microbial peptide, KLK, and an immunostimulatory oligodeoxynocleotide, ODN1a. The two-component solution can simply be mixed with antigens; no conjunction is required.

IC31® forms a depot at the injection site, releasing antigens for more than 2 months. It stimulates the active-loading of antigen into antigen-presenting cells (APCs) and in parallel activates them via toll-like receptor 9 (TLR9). This leads to maturation and activation of APCs and efficient antigen presentation. IC31® induces a highly specific immune response by the potent induction of antigen specific T-cells and stimulates strong humoral responses.

Excellent efficacy and safety in humans

IC31® is part of several vaccine candidates undergoing clinical trial in humans. When tested in a Phase I trial with our Tuberculosis vaccine, the adjuvant demonstrated a satisfactory safety and immunogenicity profile and T-cell responses were observed more than 6 months after treatment. Also, when tested in a Phase I trial in conjunction with an Influenza vaccine, IC31® showed an excellent safety profile. Patients receiving IC31® have reported excellent local tolerance with no adverse effects reported during clinical studies.

Used in collaboration with strategic partners

IC31® is used in conjunction with several vaccines in co-developed with partners, including prophylactic vaccines against Influenza and Tuberculosis, as well as a therapeutic vaccine targeting the Hepatitis C virus. In addition, IC31® is also outlicensed for use in vaccine projects targeting diseases such as malaria, meningitis and diverse sorts of infectious diseases, allergy and cancer.
