Alexander von Gabain

Alexander von Gabain obtained his Ph.D. in Genetics at the University of Heidelberg and held a post-doctorate position at the Stanford University. In the 1980s and 1990s he was a Professor at the University of Umeå and at the Karolinska Institutet, Sweden, as well as advisor to pharmaceutical and biotech companies. During 1992-1998 he was Chair of Microbiology at the University of Vienna at the Campus Vienna Biocenter, Austria. In 1997, he co-founded Intercell AG and led the company as CEO, until it was floated on the Vienna Stock Market in 2005.
He is professor of microbiology at the Max Perutz Laboratories of the University of Vienna, and foreign adjunct professor at the Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, Sweden. Prof. von Gabain serves as a scientific advisor to TVM Capital, Munich, Germany, and as Chairman of the Supervisory Board of INiTS Universitäres Gründerservice Wien GmbH, an entrepreneurial support organization of the Viennese universities for start-up businesses. He is also a member of the WHO committee “Stop Tuberculosis”, and the Committee of the Gates Foundation, “A decade of vaccines”. Since 2008, he has been serving on the governing board of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT), of which he became the Chairman in September 2011.
He currently serves as a scientific and strategic consultant to the Management Board. He is a member of Intercell's Supervisory Board since 2011.
